Strade Bianche Bike Tour Overview

Experience the excitement of the Strade Bianche, the One Day Northern Classics series most southern race venue, both as a spectator on Saturday and then as racer in the Gran Fondo on Sunday. Here in this part of Tuscany, gravel grinding is not a new thing – instead it is part of the long history of road racing in Tuscany – on these dusty, gorgeous pathways, which have long been overlooked by most tourists as well as cyclists – but are cherished by local riders. This area is home to the world renowned L’Eroica, and we will ride one of the routes featured in 2019 edition, the 100 KM itinerary – a true testimony to cycling glory days, when riders like Coppi and Bartali were sports heroes all over Europe. The Strade Bianche are both torturous as well as beautiful, tiring and at the same time exhilarating – dotted with cypress trees, olive groves, crumbling Tuscan farmhouses, vineyards, thick wooded areas as well. Some feature climbs so steep, you will never forget them. They are the absolute best way to truly get to know this part of Tuscany, catching a glimpse of an area known only to locals. We are a team of local cycling experts, and this is the area we know absolutely best. We will share with you some of our all-time favorite coffee bar rides, hearty local foods and wines like Bistecca alla Fiorentina paired with Chianti Classico Gran Selezione – as well as enjoy unforgettable paved roads mixed with Strade Bianche. Chronoplus proudly provides Cycling Tours Made in Italy.

Bike Tour Itinerary

Welcome to Tuscany! This is our first ride together in the Terre di Siena, to get over jet lag and get excited about the week to come. This is one of our favorite, short yet very sweet coffee rides. We will climb a remote mountain full of chestnut groves, through thickly wooded areas, and rocket downhill on an exhilarating, sweeping decent for many km. past vineyards, olive groves and medieval villages. This is the perfect time to make sure your bike is exactly how you like it, and let our mechanic know if there are any adjustments which need to be made for your unforgettable week of cycling ahead.

This is a classic ride in our area, and we will roll through the cobbled streets of the three medieval villages which made up the Lega del Chianti. This route is at moments challenging yet relaxing at the same time, with a good mix of terrain. Ride like a professional rider, since parts of the same route were featured in the 2016 Giro d’Italia, in a very exciting individual time trial stage.

An unforgettable immersion into the Tuscan countryside in the Terre di Siena, evoking a bygone era in cycling history. We feel this ride is a once in a lifetime experience, to be savored with each pedal stroke. It both unforgiving yet immensely rewarding – with stunning views of open landscapes near Siena, vineyards, cypress lined lanes, and dotted with small medieval villages along the way. Dusty, tough, challenging – a truly heroic effort is required for today’s ride!

Lunar landscapes wait for you today cruising on one of Italy’s most photogenic roads, often used for publicity campaigns for sports cars. There is an open, very spacious feeling as you careen by bike on a road with velvety tarmac, resembling a roller coaster ride in your favorite amusement park. This is also the area near Siena where the prized white truffle comes from, the “white gold” from the Tuscan hills.

This is the day of an unforgettable cycling showdown, when the top pro riders will battle it out on this dusty, rough battlefield called Strade Bianche. The weather at this time of year can be sunny and dry or cool and rainy, but whatever the conditions, it is surely one of the most exciting one day classic races here in Europe – not to be missed ! We will do our own early morning ride, then catch glimpses of the ride from its most exciting vantage points – for both the men’s and women’s pro race. And of course, we will be present at the finish line for the race, as the pros hammer up the final, steep, cobbled medieval streets of Siena, in preparation for the final mad sprint finish into Siena’s spectacular Piazza del Campo – arriving triumphantly like Roman gladiators after an excruciatingly, long, bloody battle.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Now it’s our turn to test our cycling meddle on a slightly shorter with a little less climbing route than the professional race. We will hit the Strade Bianche alongside thousands of other cycling enthusiasts. Our equipment won’t let us down, as we will be riding high spec, perfectly maintained Pinarello full carbon bikes. Our pro mechanic will always be nearby, just in case of any mechanicals caused by the brutal race conditions.
